Art classes on Monday and Tuesday afternoons at Fisantekraal, Stilbaai, where friends meet regularly in a relaxed atmosphere with music and fun while doing serious art. Beginners are welcome.
Louis Hiemstra lives in Stilbaai, a charming seaside village which forms part of the famous Garden Route of South Africa. It is situated along the banks of the Goukou River estuary where it meets the Indian Ocean on the Southern Cape coast of South Africa.
The town can be reached by road and lies 26 km from the turnoff of the N2 main road between Mossel Bay and Riversdale, about four hours by car from Cape Town. Stilbaai can also be reached by air or sea. The town is serviced by a national airport at George, 150 km to the east and the local airstrip for small aircraft as well as a fishing harbour.
Stilbaai is host to a number of interesting archaeological sites, including ancient fish traps thought to have been built by early ancestors of the Khoi people of the Southern Cape, and a shell landfill that has been carbon dated to around 1000 BC.
Another archaeological site is situated in a group of caves at Blombos Cave, about 12 kilometres from Stilbaai. Artifacts found at Blombos have been carbon dated to around 77,000 BP, making it the oldest known human settlement today.
Stilbaai offers a wealth of inspiration for the creative soul.
