About Louis Hiemstra
This humorous artist has been interested in art since his high school years, consequently he chose art as a subject through matriculation. During his school as well as university years he gradually developed into a very successful cartoonist. He became the official cartoonist of the University of Pretoria’s student newspaper.
Being a cartoonist stayed with him right through his career. His caricature picture series called “Swartskaap” (Black Sheep) was published in the Saturday edition of the Volksblad. Some of his caricatures were also used as illustrations in published books.
Louis formally started painting in 1986. At first he used oil paint as medium but soon opted to work mainly in watercolour paint.

He felt that he could find the spontaneity of the caricature pen only in watercolour. His words in jest: “Die spontanïteit van die karikatuurpen was alleen vir my in waterverf te vinde.”
Over the course of 25 years, around 20 different tutors added to his development as artist. Since his retirement in 2008 he resides in Stilbaai and painting became his new profession with either watercolour, acrylic or oil paint as medium.

Louis Hiemstra, (MMedFam, MFGP) is a qualified medical doctor and during his career he has been a General Practitioner.

Professor at the UFS
At a later stage he became a professor in the Family Medicine Department of the Medical School at the University of the Free State.

He showcases and sells his gorgeous watercolour paintings at national, provincial as well as other exhibitions.

Pilot
As a young man in love with flying and over 800 flying hours, Louis needed to make a difficult career decision. Finally he chose the medical profession.

Watercolour Society of South Africa
Louis was a founder member of the Bloemfontein branch of the WSSA. He is also a Fellow of the Society which is the highest grading.
